Dan Shaugnessy, sports writer for the Boston Globe, said "It feels like Super Bowl XLII all over again. History derailed. Again." Yeah... no. It was nothing like this year's (last year's?) Super Bowl. People expected the Patriots to remain perfect, and they lost. The Super Bowl loss against the Giants was EMBARRASSING. Going into this post-season, I didn't really expect a World Series win. I expected good, entertaining baseball and that's what I got. After all the Red Sox had to deal with this season, with the multiple injuries, that Manny trade, and the slumping batters (why, Tek, why?), they were far from perfect. And history? We won last year and 2004. We can still have a "dynasty." There's always next season.
In some ways, I made my peace with the ending of the Red Sox season on Thursday. It was sort of like a near-death experience. We were losing by 7 runs! How could we win? But we did. We extended the series two more games and put up a good fight. It's admirable: the Rays are a very talented team. I was pleased to read that the sentiment around the clubhouse was that the Rays deserved it and that they were the better team. After we knocked the Angels out, John Lackey bitched about how the Angels were a better team than the Red Sox. Wrong. The better team advanced to the ALCS, and now the better team is advancing to the World Series. That's how it works.
There are some very memorable moments from this season:
- The ring ceremony
- Bill Buckner throwing out the first pitch of the season
- Jon Lester's no-hitter
- JD Drew's June
- The Rays/Sox fist fight
- Manny's 500th home run
- Manny to LA
- Bay to Boston
- Sellout #456
- Making the playoffs
- Game 4 walk-off win to clinch the ALDS
- Game 5 of ALCS down by 7 in the 7th with 7 outs to go comeback, walk-off double by #7
- Jon Lester = a beast
- Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis all the time
I still have the Bruins, who have their home opener tonight against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. You know I'll be watching. There's also BC hockey and football to blog about. I'm traveling to UNC with a pep ensemble for the football game on Saturday! And I'm also insanely busy with nursing, band, and Hillside. I think I'll be OK without the Sox. Will you?
